VRM: VNF Repository and Management

The Alepo VRM is an application used to deploy, provision and manage VNFs in an NFV infrastructure. The Alepo VRM functions as a standard Virtual Network Functions Manager (VNFM), with additional functionalities, including holding the Alepo VNF Repository and Alepo VNF license keys.

A Background on NFV

Hardware-based appliances limit a communication service provider’s ability to deploy new network services quickly, rapidly evolve, and grow. In fact, an IHS Infonetics report found that nearly all respondents planned to evaluate and / or deploy NFV within the next few years.[1]

The Alepo VRM

VNFM Functionality

A key component of the NFV management and organization (MANO) architectural framework is the virtual network functions manager (VNFM). The VNFM is a critical component working with other NFV-MANO functional blocks to manage and standardize the end-to-end NFV deployment)[2]. VNFM operations include VNF:

  • Deployment
  • Instantiation
  • Scaling
  • Updating
  • Upgrading
  • Termination

Additional Functionalities

In addition to performing all of the functions of a standard VNFM, the Alepo VRM performs the following functions:

  • VNF repository and management
  • VNF life cycle management
  • VNF license management
  • Alepo license key repository
  • Load balancing orchestration
  • VNF monitoring and alerts
  • Centralized log
  • Centralized configuration management
The Alepo VRM is a mandatory requirement if any part of the Alepo solution is being deployed on an NFV infrastructure, and can be deployed side-by-side an existing VNFM.
